Descriptions of services

Therapeutic Massage: My style of Therapeutic Massage is typically a composite of several modalities like Neuromuscular Therapy, Deep, Myofascial Release, Trigger Point Therapy, Cupping, Focused Pain Relief, Relaxation, ScarWork and TMJD Intra-oral Therapy. The benefits are many and include relaxation, pain relief, stress-relief, improved immunity, mood enhancement, improved sleep and increased range of motion.

After the massage, I often make recommendations for self-treatments to maintain progress between sessions. For example, if a client has recurring pain in a specific muscle, I’ll show where and how to work on trigger points and also demonstrate clinical stretches & strengthening exercises for pain reduction.

Of course, a general Relaxation Massage is always a wonderful and beneficial option. The relaxation and mood-lifting components of massage are not to be discounted.  Deep relaxation feels wonderful, and when muscles are relaxed, they are less likely to press on nerves, blood or lymph vessels.  With the "pressure off", the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual body experiences less pain and stress, and is freed up to operate in happy harmony.

Focused Pain Relief Massage: This work focuses on areas needing pain relief, including new, chronic and acute pain. I work within your comfort level for pain and draw from these modalities: Neuromuscular Therapy, Assessment, Traction, Sacral Base Leveling, Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release, Deep Massage, Scarwork, Cupping and TMJD Intra-oral Therapy. You will usually get homework which often includes targeted stretches and strengthening exercises, directions on where, how and with what to apply pressure on trigger points and hypertonic muscles.

ScarWork: Scars can causes restrictions in the body’s network of connective tissue (fascia, muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.). Scarwork can lessen or eliminate these restrictions and increase range of motion and relieve pain. Scars are caused by surgeries including arthroscopic, biopsies, open heart, and mastectomies, as well as from burns, and also ports and PICC lines. The work is light and employs many techniques. Surprisingly, the light work is what softens the hardened fascia that is scar tissue. When it is sufficiently softened, it is reintegrated into the fascial web.

Neuromuscular Therapy: NMT is a modality used in both Therapeutic and Focused Pain Relief massages. It is advanced soft tissue treatment with a diagnostic or therapeutic objective. The focus is on treating and alleviating myofascial pain and dysfunction. The techniques are specific to location, muscle fiber arrangement, attachment sites and the function of each muscle. They include ischemic compressions, trigger point deactivation, cross fiber friction, stripping, Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) and Myofascial Release. Orthopedic assessments are sometimes used to determine where to treat and if to refer to other healthcare providers.

Trigger Point Therapy:  Trigger point therapy is a modality used in both Therapeutic and Focused Pain Relief massages. Trigger points form in hyper-sensitive strained, taut bands of muscle, actual “knots” of muscle fibers or palpable nodules in taut bands.  The points are painful (the kind that “hurts so good”) when compressed and can refer pain or tenderness to other areas of the body.  Trigger points are treated with static pressure for a few seconds to one minute, which can release some or most of the strain, thereby relieving pain.  Cross fiber friction, lengthening and stretching of the area are often part of the treatment.  The happy results are a noticeable reduction or elimination of pain.

Myofascial Release Therapy: Myofascial Release is a modality used in both Therapeutic and Focused Pain Relief massages. It is a form of Deep Tissue massage which can involve a number of techniques, such as slow gliding, comfortably deep softening of hardened, tight fascia (connective tissue), trigger point therapy, deep stripping and more. Fascia is in & around muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  It needs hydration and movement/stretches to stay supple. Without those, or with inflammation, impacts and dis-use, it can tighten and cause restrictions and stiffness. Loosening tight or hardened fascia results in greater range of motion, decreased restrictions, pain relief/freeing up nerves, and better circulation of blood and lymph.  This work can be intense but is done to the client's comfort level.  It is also deeply relaxing.  Athletes especially love it because it improves athletic performance by eliminating restrictions to joints and muscles for better range of motion.

Deep Tissue Massage is a modality which relieves tension in the deeper layers of tissue in the body.  These deep layers can often be accessed without much discomfort through myofascial release, trigger point therapy and other modalities.  Trigger point release involves a "hurts so good" sensation, which can be intense when pressure is applied to the knot or taut band, but then begins to fade often disappearing.  Deep Tissue Massage is a highly effective method for releasing tension caused by chronic stress, misalignment, repetitive motions, and past injuries.  It also increases range of motion in the joints.

Oncology Massage benefits people who have or have had cancer by providing deep relaxation, pain relief, reduction in depression and anxiety, improved sleep and more.  Depending on history, condition, treatments, timing, lymph node removal, and how the client is feeling, adjustments are made to ensure comfort and safety during the massage.

Reiki: Reiki is a Chakra-based and Japanese form of energy work that cleanses and balances the energy system in the body. As a result, the body's natural self-healing mechanisms strengthen, helping to establish optimum health. During a session, I work directly with your energy fields to remove blockages, detoxify your system, and restore your vital life energy. Reiki utilizes a gentle laying on or hovering of hands to conduct the universal/divine life energy. The benefits of Reiki include deep relaxation, release of mental/emotional stress, enhanced mood and pain relief.
